Description

It is often heard, “Happy Holidays” or “Merry Christmas” although many feel anything but happy or merry at this season or during any season, due to loss in their lives. The Christmas or Holiday season, when people gather with friends and family, this accentuates the losses in our human experience. This is due to the absence or the longing to be with those who are not with us at this season. Whether it is a death, a divorce, or a loss of a job, or a move that separates us from those we miss and love, the holidays can be joyous on the outside and agony inside. Some can pretend, while others just cannot, due to the pain.

This coupled with the desire for normalcy or the useless longing that life would not change, makes the forced changes that loss produces difficult and painful. “The holiday season is just not the same, ” is often heard from the lips of the grieving at this season. This is to be expected for grief and its process is an adjustment to the changes that a loss has produced directly or indirectly through primary and secondary losses.

The season can be a time of comfort again in time. This tough may take months or years. The key is to deal squarely with your grief. One can and must grieve. The Scriptures only entreat us not to grieve as if there is no hope. There are no quick fixes in grief. Part of the process of grief is to test the assumptions of faith anew. The result is that faith is deepened or questioned. This process is called spiritual adjustment. To better understand this read, A Grief Observed by C.S. Lewis. Lewis’ faith grew deeper but not without pain.
